What is a Hair Transplant?
Back to all articles What is a Hair Transplant? A hair transplant is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of hair follicles from one area of the scalp (known as the “donor site”) and transplanting them to another area (the “recipient site”). This can be done to restore hair growth in areas that have thinned or become bald due to genetics, injury, or medical conditions. What type of transplant does We Grow Hair Indy offer? The most common technique used for hair transplants is called “follicular unit transplantation” (FUT), We Grow Hair Indy offers a more advanced and effective version called Multi-Unit Hair Grafting™. This involves removing hair from the back of the client’s head (donor site) and dividing it into individual follicular units (which are groups of 1-4 hair follicles). These units are then transplanted to the recipient site. Another technique called “follicular unit extraction” (FUE) involves removing individual hair follicles directly from the scalp, which are then transplanted to the recipient site. We Grow Hair Indy proudly offers the ARTAS Robotic FUE Hair Transplant, the most advanced FUE technology available. What should I expect from a hair transplant? The procedure itself can take several hours, depending on the number of grafts being transplanted. You will be given a mild anesthetic, so the procedure should not be painful at all. After the procedure, you will need to take care of the transplanted area to ensure proper healing. This includes avoiding strenuous activity, avoiding sun exposure and keeping the scalp clean. After the procedure, you will likely experience some swelling and redness around the transplanted area. You should also expect some scabbing and possibly some itching. These are normal post-operative symptoms and should resolve within a few days. You will need to wait several months for the transplanted hair to grow. The hair will grow at a rate of about 1/4 inch per month, so it may take several months before you see significant growth. However, this hair growth is permanent. After the procedure, it’s also important to maintain a healthy scalp with a proper hair care routine, including other modalities to maintain non-transplanted hair. Overall, a hair transplant can be a great solution for those who want to restore hair growth in areas that have thinned or become bald. With proper care, you can achieve a natural-looking head of hair. A hair transplant is a safe and effective way to restore hair growth in areas that have thinned or become bald. The Risks of Getting a Hair Transplant Overseas: Proceed with Caution
Back to all articles The Risks of Getting a Hair Transplant Overseas: Proceed with Caution Pictured above: Not a We Grow Hair Indy client In recent years, medical tourism has gained popularity, with individuals seeking various procedures, including hair transplants, in foreign countries. The allure of “lower costs” and promises of “high-quality results” may be tempting, but it’s essential to carefully consider the potential risks involved. Our team has seen many clients in our clinic who have come to us seeking repairs or more density as a result of traveling overseas for a hair transplant. We will explore a few reasons why getting a hair transplant overseas can be a risky decision and why you should proceed with caution. Quality and Safety Concerns: While some countries may offer advanced medical facilities, others may have lax regulations and less stringent safety standards. Choosing an accredited and reputable clinic is crucial for ensuring a safe procedure. Overseas clinics may not adhere to the same standards as those in your home country, making it challenging to assess their competence and reliability. Our team prioritizes the highest standards of quality and safety, with a strong track record of successful procedures and satisfied clients. Pictured: We Grow Hair Indy’s state-of-the-art ARTAS Robotic FUE procedure room Communication Barriers: Effective communication between the patient and the medical team is vital in any medical procedure. When receiving a hair transplant overseas, language barriers can create significant obstacles. Misunderstandings can occur during consultations, pre-operative discussions, or even the post-operative care process. Such miscommunications may lead to unsatisfactory results or potential complications. Our team, consisting of experienced professionals, ensures clear and effective communication throughout the entire process, understanding your goals and expectations. Follow-up and Aftercare Challenges: A hair transplant procedure doesn’t end with the surgery itself. Adequate post-operative care and follow-up appointments are crucial for a successful outcome. Opting for a hair transplant overseas might make it difficult to receive proper follow-up care, especially if you live far away from the clinic. This lack of accessible aftercare can hinder your recovery process and may lead to unsatisfactory results or potential complications. Our team follows our clients throughout the entire process, checking in with multiple in-person follow-ups throughout the 12-month growth period after the procedure, and even longer just to check on your progress. Pictured: We Grow Hair Indy’s client and local Sports Personality Dave Furst Cultural Differences and Personalized Approach: Hair transplantation is a highly personalized procedure that requires a comprehensive understanding of the patient’s aesthetic goals and expectations. Cultural differences may influence the perception of beauty and the understanding of individual preferences. Overseas clinics may not fully grasp your desired outcome or possess the same level of expertise in catering to your unique needs, potentially resulting in dissatisfactory results. Our team recognizes and respects individual preferences, providing a personalized approach and variety of hair transplant methods to ensure the best possible outcome. Travel-related Considerations: While getting a hair transplant overseas may seem like a cost-effective option, it’s important to consider the additional expenses involved. Travel costs, accommodation, and potential time off work for an extended period can significantly add to the overall cost. Additionally, the stress of traveling and adapting to a new environment can impact your recovery process negatively. Choosing a local clinic allows for convenience, reduced travel expenses, and a smoother recovery process. What is Seasonal Hair Loss (Seasonal Shedding)?
Back to all articles What is Seasonal Hair Loss (seasonal shedding)? Seasonal hair loss is a common phenomenon that affects many individuals worldwide. It is characterized by an increase in hair shedding during certain periods of the year, and while it is generally considered normal, it can sometimes indicate underlying health issues. In this blog post, we’ll delve deeper into the causes of seasonal hair loss and what you can do to address it. So, how is it caused? Hormonal changes: As one of the most common causes of seasonal hair loss, fluctuations in hormones, such as those that occur during pregnancy or menopause, can cause hair loss. Moreover, changes in hormone levels during the fall and winter months can contribute to seasonal shedding. During these months, our bodies tend to produce more androgens, which can cause hair follicles to shrink, leading to hair loss. Stress: The holiday season, exams, or any other stressful event can cause hair loss to worsen. When we experience stress, our bodies release cortisol, a hormone that can cause hair follicles to enter the resting phase, leading to hair loss. Diet and Nutrition: A poor diet or a deficiency in certain nutrients, such as iron or protein, can lead to hair loss. Eating a healthy, balanced diet that includes a variety of vitamins and minerals can help promote healthy hair growth. Weather Conditions: The cold, dry air of winter can strip the scalp of its natural oils, leading to dryness and flakiness, which can contribute to hair loss. Additionally, wearing hats or other headwear that can cause friction or sweating can also lead to hair loss. Certain Medications: For example, medications used to treat depression or high blood pressure can lead to hair loss. It’s important to talk to your doctor if you suspect that your medication is causing hair loss. In conclusion, seasonal hair loss is a common occurrence that can be caused by a variety of factors, including hormonal changes, stress, diet, weather, and medication. Identifying the cause of your hair loss is the first step in addressing it. If you’re experiencing hair loss, schedule a free consultation with our Trichologists today to help you get to the root of the problem. If you’re experiencing seasonal hair loss, it’s essential to identify the underlying cause. Our Trichologists can perform a Hair and Scalp Analysis to determine the root cause of your hair loss. They can also recommend treatments to help promote healthy hair growth, such as topical treatments or supplements.
What to Expect When Getting a Hair Transplant
Back to all articles What to Expect When Getting a Hair Transplant A hair transplant (also known as hair transplantation) is a procedure that involves moving donor hair follicles from one part of the scalp to another, usually to restore hair growth in areas that are thinning or balding. Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT) and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) are two of the most common hair transplant techniques. The use of either one of these techniques is dependent on the level of hair loss, hair type, hair texture, and the hair restoration expectations of the client. The term “donor hair” is the hair used in a hair transplant procedure. It is taken from the back or sides of the scalp, where hair is typically more resistant to balding. Hair on the back of the head is more resistant to balding due to its resistance to the hormone DHT, which is the main root cause of genetic hair loss. The hair is then carefully transplanted to the balding or thinning areas of the scalp, creating a fuller, more natural-looking head of hair. If you’re considering a hair transplant, here is a glimpse into the process: 1. Consultation with a Hair Loss Specialist: Your first step is to schedule a consultation with a hair loss specialist. They will examine your scalp and hair, discuss your goals and concerns, and evaluate whether you’re a good candidate for a transplant. Knowing that the first step to getting your hair back is to schedule a consultation with a hair loss specialist, the next important step is to go to a place that offers more than one hair transplant option. Meeting with a clinic that offers both FUT and FUE procedure options means that you will get the best, unbiased opinion as to which option best suits your specific needs. That is why We Grow Hair Indy proudly offers the latest technology in hair restoration, Multi-Unit Hair Grafting™ and ARTAS Robotic FUE hair transplants. At We Grow Hair Indy, your first consultation with a hair loss specialist to examine what hair loss solution is best for your needs is also completely free, click here to get more information on scheduling. 2. Procedure with an experienced Hair Transplant Surgeon: Hair transplants typically take several hours to complete, depending on the size of the area being treated. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and involves removing hair follicles from the donor site, typically the back of the head, and transplanting them to the recipient site. The length of the procedure is dependent on the amount of hair harvested and the method of the hair transplant. Multi-Unit Hair Grafting™ procedures typically take around 5-6 hours whilst ARTAS Robotic FUE can take 7-8 hours. At We Grow Hair Indy, our technicians have an average of 18 years of experience strictly performing hair transplants. Our Physicians have over 19 years of experience strictly performing hair transplants. When considering a hair transplant, it is important to choose a clinic with an experienced team, because as much as a hair transplant is a medical procedure, it is also an art. The artistry behind a hair transplant comes from the angles of the sites being made and the mapping of the individual’s natural hair angles, this is truly what determines natural-looking results. 3. Recovery and Aftercare: After the procedure, you may experience some swelling, redness, and itching at the transplant site. Unlike most hair transplant clinics, We Grow Hair Indy understands the importance of great follow-up care, and includes a post-procedure hair wash the day after your hair transplant to check on the hair grafts and ensure the area is properly cleansed. After your initial hair wash, you will be given instructions for how to care for the area, which typically involves sleeping with your head elevated, proper cleansing, and avoiding any activities that may cause trauma to the transplanted hair (limiting exercise and intense physical movement). Following aftercare instructions is essential to a healthy and fast recovery. The medical team at We Grow Hair Indy will reach out during important milestones throughout your recovery and is always available to discuss any concerns or questions you may have. Patient care is our number one priority, and we will be checking in with you on a consistent basis to make sure that you are recovering properly. The medical team is your best resource for any questions or concerns that arise during the entirety of your hair restoration journey. 4. Results: It typically takes several months for the transplanted hair to grow, and the full results of the procedure may not be visible for several months to a year. The transplanted hair will continue to grow as it did before and should look and feel natural. Results will vary from person to person, it is dependent on the type of hair transplant they received, the amount of hair transplanted, hair type and texture, adherence to aftercare instructions, the use of other modalities, and the level of loss that they were experiencing prior to the procedure. 5. Maintenance after the Hair Transplant: Many people ask if there is anything that they need to do after having a hair transplant. Although the transplanted hair is permanent, it is important to take a global approach. What this means is that you want to replace what you have lost and keep the existing non-transplanted hair that you have. This helps to minimize the potential for 2nd procedures as well. Ultimately, there is a percentage of those that need an additional procedure. You’ll need to follow a good hair care routine, including regular shampooing and conditioning, and avoid anything that may cause damage to your hair. We Grow Hair Indy’s physicians encourage the use of other medical therapies like finasteride and/or minoxidil to keep the non-transplanted hair long-term as well. Overall, hair transplants are a safe and effective way to restore hair growth in areas that are thinning or balding. By understanding what to expect before, during, and after the

Manual FUE vs ARTAS Robotic FUE Hair Transplant
Back to all articles Manual FUE vs ARTAS Robotic FUE Hair Transplant Deciding to have a hair transplant is a big life choice and understanding what the differences are between the procedure types is paramount. One of the popular “buzz words” in hair restoration today is “FUE hair transplant”. What is an FUE hair transplant exactly? What are the different kinds of FUE procedures, and how are they different? Here we will be discussing different types of FUE hair transplant procedures, including the ARTAS Robotic FUE hair transplant procedure. ARTAS Robotic FUE vs. Manual FUE At PAI Medical Group of Indiana (WeGrowHairIndy), we believe in staying up-to-date on the most advanced technology in hair restoration and offering the best hair transplant techniques available anywhere in the world. For these reasons, we invested in the most technologically advanced hair transplant procedure, the ARTAS Robotic FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction). FUE procedures are not something new to the market, but a majority of the procedures done throughout the world are manual handheld FUE procedures, like a NeoGraft device. A manual handheld FUE hair transplant is a procedure that is done by a physician using a handheld device to extract the individual hair follicles. Much of the success of this form of procedure is entirely as a result of the efficiency and experience of the Physician, to ensure that harvesting happens at a natural distance apart and that the hair follicle does not get transected during harvesting. Perfectly extracting 500 – 3,000 follicles by hand takes a steady hand and a tremendous amount of time. In comparison, the ARTAS FUE hair transplant procedure is a physician guided robotic FUE hair transplant device. This simply states that the physician will be in control of the robot during the procedure by selecting the density amount desired for harvesting as well as mapping out the desired donor area. The physician does not actually harvest the donor grafts. The harvesting step is all completed by the ARTAS robot with unparalleled precision and accuracy. ARTAS does 3-D mapping of the patient’s scalp and hair follicles. This determines the follicle angle under the scalp and is able to do this by updating its positions during extraction 50 times per second, as well as calculating and mapping the distance between each follicle that has been harvested to ensure that the harvested area is not “over harvested”. This ensures the best possible result for the hair transplant recipient. See image below for ARTAS detailed mapping example: The largest advantage for ARTAS is having this state of the art technology, which is something that is unachievable with any type of manual handheld FUE hair transplant procedure including NeoGraft. ARTAS eliminates the factor of human error, such as fatigue with follicle harvesting. As you can imagine, 3-6 hours of harvesting individual follicles can be very taxing for any one person and, as that time progresses, the quality of the thousandths follicle cannot be guaranteed to be the same quality as the first. In addition, it is virtually impossible for the human eye to predict hair angles under the scalp or have exact measured spacing between each extraction to ensure the natural look post procedure. Why Get a Second Hair Transplant?
Back to all articles Why Get a Second Hair Transplant? Michael Leepper is one of our clients who decided to have a second hair transplant procedure. Sometimes clients like to have more than one procedure to enhance the improvement they already experienced with their first hair transplant. With a second procedure, you can increase density, address a new area, or lower or broaden your hairline. In Michael’s case, he got a second hair transplant in order to increase density in his frontal area. Below you’ll see the results we were able to achieve after Michael’s first and second Multi-Unit Hair Grafting™ procedures. Typically the first hair transplant is going to give you the biggest cosmetic difference. In his first hair transplant, we were able to recreate his hairline and reframe his face. After the second hair transplant, you’ll notice the additional thickness in the hairline. It’s tougher to see the drastic difference when you’re simply transplanting for more thickness and volume. The biggest impact you’ll see from a second hair transplant is when you’re addressing a new area of hair loss. To see all of Michael’s before and after photos, click below. Laser Hair Therapy for Hair Loss
Back to all articles Laser Hair Therapy for Hair Loss The hair follicle is one of the most interesting organs of the body, and it’s quite fascinating because it can self-generate. You may notice hairs that have fallen out on your clothes or in your comb every day, yet you may not know that the average person can lose 50-100 hairs per day. This is considered normal hair loss or shedding. So, what is “not normal” hair loss? If your hair starts to fall out in clumps (instead of single strands), especially when you comb your hair or are in the shower, you should consider seeking treatment options. One non-invasive option that has shown success in several studies is Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT). Low Level Laser Therapy uses infra-red laser beams to treat a variety of health conditions, one of which is hair loss. LLLT is a painless therapy that decreases inflammation and increases local blood flow to the papilla of the hairs, which brings nutrients and energy that your hair needs to stimulate new growth. LLLT does not get hot or burn tissue on the scalp. It is FDA approved and has been scientifically proven to be both safe and, when used correctly, highly effective for hair restoration. There are several things that can cause hair loss but treating the condition when it begins will help with the future success of addressing the area of concern. Hair Loss Causes: Alopecia related autoimmune disorders Stress Sudden weight loss Certain diseases and health conditions Certain scalp conditions or infections such as ringworm, seborrheic dermatitis, and folliculitis. Medications such as those that include high doses of Vitamin A, blood thinners, birth control pills, and steroids. Smoking (in some cases) Overuse of hair care products or wrong hair care practices What does it treat? LLLT can help treat several types of Alopecia. Androgenetic Alopecia (male or female pattern baldness) being one of the most common causes of hair loss in both men and women, and most commonly treated by LLLT. People who have Androgenetic Alopecia have a gene that makes them more susceptible to the effects of the androgenic hormone, Dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT can build up in the inner root of the hair follicles, causing the follicles to get smaller and smaller. Eventually, when this happens, the follicles become dormant and hair growth stops completely. LLLT is most successful for those that have miniaturized, yet active, hair follicles. Those that do not have active follicles (not producing hair) in the area would not be considered a candidate for this form of treatment and would be best suited for another solution, like a hair transplant procedure. In addition to LLLT helping with stimulation of hair growth, it can treat the scalp itself. It has shown that it can reduce excess skin 5 alpha reductase and DHT, relieving scalp conditions such as psoriasis, seborrhoeic dermatitis, itchy/scaling scalp (through its anti-inflammatory responses), as well as reducing tight and tender scalps. Some individuals will utilize LLLT to help with the healing process post hair transplant procedure to yield faster and better results. What LLLT specifically does: LLLT uses a light that produces a specific wavelength (range from 630-670 nanometers), which has a unique ability to be absorbed by the molecules of hair follicles. This type of light penetrates the scalp and stimulates the epidermal stem cells, those which are responsible for the regeneration of hair follicles. The increased blood flow that LLLT causes helps to increase the delivery of nutrients and oxygen to the hair follicles. Lastly, Low Level Laser Therapy stimulates metabolic processes necessary for hair growth and helps prevent the build-up of DHT in the follicles. These processes are achieved by the use of cellular respiration and the creation of Adenosine Triphosfate (ATP). This mechanism helps to normalize cellular function, increase oxygen production and decrease inflammation. What LLLT Can and Can’t Do: This is highly effective at treating the weaker, more thin, wispier hair follicles, allowing the hair to get thicker, stronger, and healthier. It’s also a great solution to stop or slow down hair loss in its tracks. LLLT only works if there is an active hair follicle, so it cannot cause hair growth in hair follicles that are already inactive (areas on the scalp where there is no hair at all). Trying to use LLLT in these areas is like trying to fertilize a garden that you have forgotten to plant. Therefore, it is best to start this treatment as early as possible and to stop the damage before it happens. The treatment plan: A microscopic evaluation is necessary to determine the activity of a follicle. If deemed an appropriate candidate, it can take four to six months to begin seeing desired results, if used consistently. Although some may see results more quickly. It is recommended by the FDA to do treatments two to three times a week for 20 to 30 minutes. Studies: There are no reports now that result in negative side effects. Treating the cause of hair loss when it begins can allow for hair to grow back more quickly with a less invasive approach like LLLT. In some cases, other treatments are needed. The success of this treatment is all dependent upon your own expectations and consistency, and the cause of hair loss. Treatment for hair loss caused by an illness, medicine, or damage to the hair usually tend to yield results more quickly than treatments for inherited hair loss, but can be effective either scenario.
