What is PRP?

PRP is Platelet Rich Plasma, but why is this treatment for hair loss as successful as it is? To better understand this, we have to look at the components that are found within the blood. Blood is primarily made up of fluid, which is the plasma but it also contains red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. When the blood is drawn from a patient, the blood is then spun in a centrifuge to separate out the platelets and the plasma from the red blood cells.

PRP

The platelets are primarily known for their clotting factors, but within these platelets, there are proteins that can be found and these proteins are called growth factors. After the centrifugation of the blood occurs, we are able to yield a higher concentration of these platelets (up to 5 times) than they normally would naturally. Why is that important to know? These growth factors, that are found in the platelets, are essential to our healing process and, by having a concentrated amount of growth factors in an area of damaged tissue (similar in the occurrence of hair loss), they assist in healing those cells.

Below you are able to see the different roles of different growth factors.

Growth factors

Growth factors are important in the healing process of all cellular functions because they act as signaling molecules. Having this communication between cells, allows for specific cellular receptors to bind to their target cells. This type of communication with growth factors also can cause a cell to go from one cell type to another more specific cell type that is needed for healing, also known as cellular differentiation. When PRP is injected into the scalp, it has been shown to activate the dormant hair follicles and stimulates hair growth by replacing the damaged cells or stimulating an environment for the cells to regain proper cellular function.

When PRP combined with ACell is injected, the results are even greater. ACell is a protein extra cellular matrix which utilizes the body’s own tissue regeneration to stimulate growth in the hair follicles, thus strengthening weakened hairs. Adding ACell, it prolongs the nourishment and stimulation of your hair follicles for several months.  The injected platelets, along with the ACell, prompts inactive hair follicles to enter into an active growth phase, which causes the hair to stop miniaturizing and gain more strength and density.

Is PRP Right for Me?

  • Are you noticing increased shedding (more than 150 hairs a day)?
  • Are you self-conscious about certain areas of your hair being thin?
  • Do you wish there was a way to not only stop hair loss but also get thicker and more full hair without surgery?
  • As another option, PRP is also a great method for transplant patients to use for faster and more effective healing of the suture line in the donor harvest. In addition, PRP helps with accelerated healing of the grafts in the recipient site – allowing for less downtime and faster results!

Hair loss won’t stop on its own. PRP treatments are a perfect way to revitalize a your hair follicles and begin growing stronger hair!
