If you’ve been on the fence about hair restoration, let Joe’s story be the inspiration you need. Over the course of several months, Former Staff Sergeant Joe Bergen documented his Multi-Unit Hair Grafting™ experience with We Grow Hair Indy, offering a real, unfiltered look at what it’s like to undergo a hair transplant—and the life-changing results that can come with it.
From the first 24 hours to the 9-month mark, here’s a breakdown of Joe’s transformation.
Joe kicked off his journey with optimism and relief. Just one day after his procedure, he reported feeling great, with minimal discomfort. In fact, his doctor confirmed they were able to transplant more grafts than initially expected, setting the stage for great results
“Everything looks really good… we were able to get quite a few more hairs than what was originally anticipated.”
By day five, Joe was back to his regular routine, including work and even a little fishing with his son. He mentioned some mild tenderness at the suture site, but overall, he felt confident and encouraged by how smoothly the recovery was going.
Joe had his stitches removed and revealed the healing area beneath his cap. While some scabbing remained, a large portion had already fallen off, and the signs of new growth were becoming visible. “Still have a little of that leopard, polka-dot look, but a bunch of it has come off.”
A common part of hair restoration is the “shedding phase,” and Joe started noticing some of the transplanted hairs falling out. But he knew this was normal—and a sign that new growth was around the corner.
He also began using Rogaine and an at-home laser band to support the process. “Little blonde baby hairs are already starting to come in—especially in the rebuilt hairline.”
Joe was surprised by how quickly the hair started to come in compared to average timelines. There were no complications, and he even caught himself spending more time in front of the mirror, admiring the progress. “It’s probably coming in quicker than average… I’ve had absolutely no issues, knock on wood.”
At the five-month mark, the results were undeniable. Joe’s new hairline was visibly fuller and his confidence soared. By six months, he had stopped wearing a hat—something he never thought he’d do while out in the woods. “I had to let the magnificent locks blow in the breeze… everything is coming along magically.”
As Joe approached the one-year milestone, the transformation was nearly complete. Friends and family noticed the change—some even shocked to learn he had a hair transplant because it looked so natural. “The main comment I get is: ‘If you hadn’t told me, I never would’ve known.’”
Joe’s hair had thickened significantly and grown in length, and he was still seeing active growth and even a few ingrown hairs—a good sign of continued follicle activity.
Joe credits the We Grow Hair Indy team for exceeding his expectations and delivering on their promises. His message to anyone considering the procedure is simple: “If I could do it, anybody can do it.”
