Understanding the Connection Between Stress and Hair Loss

April is Stress Awareness Month, giving time to showcase the effects stress can have on your body and more specifically on your hairline. While stress is a common aspect of modern life, its impact on physical health, particularly hair health, often goes underestimated.

The Why

Telogen effluvium is a type of hair loss characterized by a sudden shedding of hair, typically occurring after a stressful event or period of prolonged stress. According to the National Institute of Health, there are three phases of the hair growth cycle. In the first phase of growth (anagen), strands push through the skin. Next, degeneration (catagen) occurs where hair stops growing and the follicle under the skin at the base shrinks. The shrinking will cause the hair to weaken and fall out in the telogen phase, which is when the cycle starts over. However, telogen effluvium was found when researchers tested the adrenal glands that produce stress hormones because over time they blocked the follicles between the telogen and anagen phases, preventing regrowth after loss.

The Impact

When stress hormones are being overproduced over a long period of time, permanent damage is a strong possibility. The impact of stress-induced hair loss extends beyond physical appearance, often taking a toll on one’s emotional well-being and self-esteem. Individuals experiencing hair loss may feel self-conscious, leading to anxiety, depression, and diminished quality of life. Moreover, the psychological distress caused by hair loss can perpetuate a cycle of stress, exacerbating the condition further.
