Our skin and hair are the first to suffer the effects of everyday damaging environmental factors. These factors include; chemicals, pollution, minerals, weather, and sun exposure. Our bodies succumb to damage overtime, which can lead to visible skin dryness and wrinkles, as well as thin and brittle hair.
The Effects of Pollution:
Humid or Dry Environments:
Depending on where you live, the humidity or dryness of your environment can have a large impact on the health of your hair and skin. If you live in an environment with high temperatures and sun exposure, the UV rays can damage the proteins in your hair and scalp sunburns can cause irreversible damage to your hair follicles, stunting their growth. If you live in an environment with cold temperatures, your hair can become very brittle, as there is less moisture in the air. Frequent use of hats and scarves can also cause friction and result in breakage of your hair strands.Environmental Toxins:
Everyday, we are exposed to environmental toxins that are absorbed into our bodies. Depending on where you live or work, you could be at an increased level of exposure than others (e.g. chemical factories, industrial sites, warehouses, disaster or contaminated zones). These toxins can have an effect on hormonal levels in our bodies, thus depriving the hair of nutrients, and leading to hair follicle damage. Other chemicals that are used in households such as; benzene, formaldehyde, and pesticides can also cause hair loss.
It is hard to avoid a lot of the damaging effects of our environment on a daily basis. We come into contact with many of these factors due to our lifestyle, job, living situation, and hygiene habits.
In order to combat the unavoidable side of environmental damage to your hair and skin, we recommend speaking to a trichologist in order to understand some of the issues you are experiencing. A trichologist can perform a hair and scalp analysis and offer a treatment plan to ensure that you are set up for optimal hair growth.
We Grow Hair Indy offers free virtual and in-person consultations, including a hair and scalp analysis with one of our trichologists. For more information, call 317-522-2995 or schedule a free consultation with us.
